Introducing Lodel 2.0 for OpenEdition Books

Version 2.0 of Lodel, our digital publishing software designed for publishing content on our OpenEdition Journals, OpenEdition Books and Calenda platforms, has been rolled out for OpenEdition Books.
The complete overhaul of Lodel is a major project launched by OpenEdition as part of the EquipEx+ COMMONS project, the goal being to improve maintenance and create new features. OpenEdition Books is the first of our platforms to migrate to Lodel 2.0.
In the coming weeks, we will be collecting feedback from visitors, publishing teams and libraries to troubleshoot any remaining bugs, identify new requirements, and find out which new features are most popular.

Upgrading Lodel meant rewriting the code under the Symfony framework to create a more permanent and stable architecture capable of handling all kinds of future upgrades. The software will also be getting a new look in the near future.

The work involved was especially complex as it entailed harmonising everything upstream to ensure that all the data would be properly integrated into the new version.

For OpenEdition Books, data migration involved:

  • 14,667 books and 133 publishers
  • About 1,000 series
  • Over 264,000 documents

Although Lodel still operates in the same way overall, the new version includes a number of key enhancements for the back office (the publishing interface for editorial teams) and front office (the user interface for visitors).

Essential new features for visitors

  • A responsive design (the interface adapts to the screen format)
  • Improved accessibility
  • A new layout for notes, citations, images, boxes, etc.
  • Migration to HTML5 to generate ePub 3 formats
  • A new font (Noto) to make diacritical marks more visible

Essential new features for publishers

  • Decentralised and independent user account management
  • More user-friendly publishing interface and forms
  • A deferred publication option
  • Native processing of the new enriched XML TEI schema (now includes poetry, theatre, citations and elaborate boxes) shared with Métopes
  • Integration of a new corresponding style sheet
