Focus: update on OpenEdition’s usage reporting services
OpenEdition is improving its usage reporting service, a key service for partner institutions, book publishers and journal editorial teams. The goal of the project is to update the application that generates statistical reports to improve its performance and reliability. We are also planning to adopt the COUNTER 5.1 code of practice, which is essential for guaranteeing compliance and the interoperability of usage statistics between the various report providers.
OpenEdition’s usage statistics are currently produced in keeping with COUNTER 5.0. Version 5.1 of the code of practice (https://www.countermetrics.org/education/changes/) came into effect on 1 January 2025. Our application is currently being updated, with the new version scheduled for release in summer 2025. Reports complying with COUNTER 5.1 will be available for usage data logged from 1 January 2025.
The update will lead to significant improvements, such as faster and more reliable report generation thanks to optimized queries and data processing. The project involves overhauling the technical infrastructure to improve maintenance and updating capabilities, and introducing global usage statistics to give book publishers and journal editorial teams a better understanding of how their resources are used. We will be regularly informing our partners and user community of the project’s progress and the upcoming phases.
Overhaul and migration to COUNTER 5.1
An in-depth review of usage data processing operations, which underpin our reporting service, is currently underway to improve the user experience. A new infrastructure will provide the means for a faster and more seamless transition.
The changes will offer partner institutions an updated service that meets the latest standards and is capable of providing accurate and usable statistics to optimize management of their resources.
Global usage statistics
In addition to COUNTER-compliant reports, our new global usage statistics will provide book publishers and journal editorial teams with a more comprehensive overview of how their resources are used, regardless of whether the resources are linked to an institution. The analyses provided will help publishing and editorial teams spot trends and adapt their publication offering accordingly.
The reports are generated via the same infrastructure as the COUNTER reports, but for strategic rather regulatory purposes. To fine-tune these tools, we will be organizing a consultation with publishers and editorial teams to better understand their expectations and provide statistics that are relevant to them in the second half of 2025.
The goal of these improvements is to provide a more efficient usage reporting service that complies with international standards and meets needs more precisely.
We would like to warmly thank our partners and user community in advance for their patience and understanding throughout this update!
